Joanne Manaster Biography
Joanne Manaster is a cell and molecular biologist, educator, and science communication advocate focused on making science accessible and engaging for diverse audiences. As a faculty lecturer in biology at the University of Illinois School of Integrative Biology, Manaster brings extensive experience in university-level science instruction. She has taught upper-level laboratory courses in histology, molecular and cellular biology, and bioengineering, and also teaches online courses for certified teachers pursuing a master's in science teaching of biology. Her curriculum covers topics such as the human genome, evolution and medicine, and emerging infectious diseases.
Manaster's science communication efforts extend beyond the university setting through digital platforms, where she experiments with new media formats, produces video book reviews of popular science books, and creates tutorials on scientific concepts. She has developed a significant social media following for science topics, aiming to share accurate science stories with the general public and encourage youth, particularly girls, to consider STEM careers. Mashable recognized her as having one of the 25 Twitter Accounts That Will Make You Smarter. Under the handle @sciencegoddess, Manaster has built an online community dedicated to the idea that science is for everyone.
Manaster co-hosts the YouTube Live and Google Hangout on Air program "Read Science!," where she and her co-host interview popular science book authors about their work and the importance of science communication. She has contributed to the Scientific American Network with a blog examining science in TV, video, and film. Manaster's expertise in cell biology and science writing has been acknowledged in several books, including "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot, "Blood Work" by Holly Tucker, "Free Radicals" by Michael Brooks, and "The Tangled Tree" by David Quammen.
In addition to teaching, Manaster has served as lead faculty for the Bioengineering GAMES camp at the University of Illinois and provides scientific learning modules, tours, and tutorials to homeschool and public school groups. She has participated in outreach projects such as advising the University of Illinois iGEM team and the Bugscope project, and serves on the International Advisory Panel for Young Scientists Journal. Manaster was invited as a new media specialist to India by the International Reporting Project to explore child survival issues from a scientific perspective. As a frequent keynote and guest speaker, she addresses events aimed at encouraging young people, girls, and women to pursue STEM careers and shares her expertise in online science education. Manaster has appeared multiple times on the Incomplete List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students at the University of Illinois. Her work reflects a commitment to science literacy, digital engagement, and STEM education.
