Gregg Renfrew Biography
Gregg Renfrew is an American entrepreneur recognized for her impact on the clean beauty industry, retail innovation, and consumer advocacy. Renfrew began her career by co-founding the bridesmaid company Elizabeth Gregg and later partnered to launch the U.S. operations of The Wedding List, a London-based bridal registry company. That venture attracted investment from Nordstrom and was acquired by Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, marking the first acquisition under the Martha Stewart Living brand. Renfrew later served as CEO of the children's retail organization Best & Co. and developed a consulting practice with clients such as J.Crew, Bergdorf Goodman, Intermix, and Jessica Alba, establishing her expertise in retail and brand strategy.
Renfrew founded Beautycounter, a clean beauty brand and Certified Benefit Corporation, with a mission to provide safer personal care products. Central to Beautycounter's identity was the Never List, a compilation of more than 2,800 ingredients the company pledged to exclude from its formulations. Under Renfrew's leadership, Beautycounter grew into a billion-dollar enterprise with a large network of independent brand advocates across North America. The company received recognition from Fast Company, Allure, Glamour, and CNBC. Renfrew was named to Fast Company's Most Creative People, Inc. Renfrew has been an advocate for federal regulation of the cosmetics industry, lobbying Congress to update safety standards and testifying as an expert witness in a Congressional hearing on cosmetic reform. Renfrew sold a majority stake in Beautycounter to The Carlyle Group in a deal that valued the company at $1 billion. After stepping aside as CEO and witnessing the company's subsequent struggles, Renfrew repurchased the brand's assets and began rebuilding the business. Renfrew relaunched the brand as Counter, a direct-to-consumer, affiliate-driven model focused on community commerce.
