Raoul Peck Biography
Raoul Peck is a filmmaker known for his politically engaged works that span feature films and documentaries. Raised across Congo, New York, France, and Germany, Peck grounds his filmography in a deep political commitment and a multicultural perspective. He studied industrial engineering and economics at Berlin University, worked as a New York City taxi driver, journalist, and photographer, and later earned a film degree from the German Film and Television Academy in West Berlin. Peck’s approach to cinematic storytelling is influenced by his experiences as an activist and his analysis of global economic structures.
Peck’s films often explore suppressed histories and challenge Eurocentric narratives. His feature film "The Man on the Shore" premiered at Cannes, marking the first time a Caribbean film received this recognition. The film depicts a family’s experience under Duvalierist rule, as seen through the eyes of a young girl, and achieved international critical success. His documentary "Lumumba: Death of a Prophet" won multiple Best Documentary Awards at international film festivals and introduced the recurring theme of memory in his work. Peck has received honors such as the Nestor Almendros Award from Human Rights Watch, induction into Haiti’s Honor and Merit Order, and knighthood in France’s Order of Arts and Literature.
Peck’s widely recognized documentary, "I Am Not Your Negro," examines the life of James Baldwin and race relations in the United States. The film was nominated for an Academy Award and won a César Award in France, as well as audience awards at the Toronto and Berlin International Film Festivals and a BAFTA for Best Documentary Film. His HBO documentary miniseries "Exterminate All the Brutes" received a Peabody Award. The film "Ernest Cole: Lost and Found" premiered as a Special Screening at Cannes and was awarded the L’Œil d’Or.
In addition to filmmaking, Peck has contributed to public life and film education. He served as Haiti’s Minister of Culture and chaired the board of directors of La Fémis, a public film school in France, where he helped launch "La Résidence," a program supporting young filmmakers. Peck is the founder of Velvet Film, a production company with operations in Paris, New York, and Port-au-Prince, and established the El Dorado Forum in Port-au-Prince to support artists’ creativity and development.
Peck has received honors including the Irene Diamond Lifetime Achievement Award for human rights work, the Lifetime Achievement Award from DOC NYC, and the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Hot Docs Festival in Toronto. He has served as a jury member at Cannes, Berlinale, and Sundance. Peck’s filmography features figures central to the fight for emancipation and critiques of Eurocentric historical narratives, establishing him as a significant voice in global discussions on race, colonialism, and historical memory.
