George Church Biography
George Church is a geneticist, molecular engineer, chemist, and entrepreneur whose work has significantly influenced the fields of genomics and synthetic biology. Church holds the Robert Winthrop Professorship of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and is a member of the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology faculty. He leads Synthetic Biology at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University, overseeing research on the directed evolution of molecules, polymers, and genomes to develop tools for regenerative medicine and the bio-production of chemicals.
Church's contributions to genomics began with his doctoral work at Harvard, where he developed methods for direct genome sequencing, molecular multiplexing, and barcoding. These innovations enabled the sequencing of the first pathogen genome, Helicobacter pylori. His work has influenced nearly all next-generation DNA sequencing technologies and companies, including CGI-BGI, Life, Illumina, and Nanopore. Church also launched the Personal Genome Project, an open-access repository of human genomic, environmental, and trait data, advancing personal genomics and data sharing in the life sciences.
Through his laboratory at Harvard, Church has co-founded approximately 50 biotechnology companies. His research has led to the formation of companies such as Editas, Gen9bio, and Veritas Genetics, focusing on gene therapy, synthetic DNA, and full human genome sequencing, respectively. Church was part of the team that developed the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing tool, which has transformed medicine, agriculture, and biological research. His lab conducts research across developmental biology, gene and cell therapy, neurobiology, aging, genomics, diagnostics, space biology, and ecosystem science.
Church co-founded Colossal Biosciences with entrepreneur Ben Lamm, a company focused on de-extinction and conservation genetics. The venture aims to incorporate genetic traits from ancient mammoth DNA into the Asian elephant, with projects targeting species such as the woolly mammoth, dire wolf, northern white rhinoceros, Tasmanian tiger, and dodo bird. This work highlights the intersection of synthetic biology, conservation, and biotechnology entrepreneurship.
Church's achievements have been recognized with honors including the Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science from the Franklin Institute for contributions to genomic science and DNA sequencing technologies. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering and was named to the Time 100 list. Church co-authored the book "Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves," which explores the future of synthetic biology. His career reflects a combination of scientific research, biotechnology innovation, and public engagement in genomics and synthetic biology.
