Gemma Chan is a British actress known for her transition from studying law at the University of Oxford to a career in film, television, and theater. After attending Drama Centre London, Chan began her career in the entertainment industry as a model, appearing on the first season of "Project Catwalk" and in various advertising campaigns before moving into acting.
Chan has appeared in British television series such as "Doctor Who," "Sherlock," "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," "Fresh Meat," and "Bedlam." She gained wider recognition for her leading role in the Channel 4 science fiction series "Humans," earning a nomination for a Broadcasting Press Guild Award for her portrayal of Anita. In 2026, she starred in Peacock's limited series "The Five Star Weekend." Her stage work includes performances in the UK premiere of David Henry Hwang's "Yellow Face" at The Park Theatre and the world premiere of "Our Ajax" by Timberlake Wertenbaker at Southwark Playhouse in London.
Chan starred in "Crazy Rich Asians," a Hollywood production featuring an all-Asian cast, where her role as Astrid Leong-Teo contributed to the film's commercial success. She also appeared as Elizabeth Hardwick in "Mary Queen of Scots" and took on roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films "Captain Marvel" and "Eternals," portraying Minn-Erva and Sersi, respectively. Additional film credits include Olivia Wilde's psychological thriller "Don't Worry Darling," Gareth Edwards' science fiction film "The Creator," and Duke Johnson's film "The Actor."
