Garth Stein Biography
Garth Stein is an American author, documentary filmmaker, playwright, and former amateur race car driver whose work encompasses literature, film, and theater. Stein earned a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College of Columbia University and a Master of Fine Arts in film from the university's School of the Arts. He has worked as a director, producer, and writer of documentary films, including co-producing the Academy Award-winning short film "The Lunch Date" and producing "The Last Party," featuring Robert Downey Jr.
Stein's novel "The Art of Racing in the Rain" has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide, been translated into 38 languages, and appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for more than three years. The novel, narrated from the perspective of the protagonist's dog Enzo, explores philosophy and the human condition through the lens of car racing. Stein's involvement in motorsport includes participation in high performance driver education, earning a racing license with the Sports Car Club of America, and winning the points championship in the Northwest Region Spec Miata class. He retired from racing following a serious crash. "The Art of Racing in the Rain" was adapted into a motion picture, with Kevin Costner providing the voice of Enzo.
Stein is the author of four novels: the New York Times bestselling "A Sudden Light"; the internationally bestselling "The Art of Racing in the Rain"; the PNBA Book Award winner "How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets"; and "Raven Stole the Moon." He also wrote the full-length play "Brother Jones," which premiered in Los Angeles and was described as brimming with intensity by Los Angeles Weekly. Stein has received multiple literary awards, including two PNBA awards.
Stein is a co-founder of Seattle7Writers, a nonprofit collective focused on supporting readers, writers, and communities through funding, programming, and book donations. He has served as inaugural chair of the Author Leadership Circle of the Book Industry Charitable Foundation. Stein is recognized for his advocacy of literacy and civic engagement, and his public appearances reflect the depth of storytelling and philosophical inquiry present in his work.
