Frank Meeink Biography
Frank Meeink is recognized for his work addressing radicalization, hate, and redemption in the United States. Meeink became involved with the skinhead movement at age 13 and later led a skinhead gang on the East Coast. By 18, he served time in an Illinois prison. As a teenager, Meeink hosted a public access talk show called "The Reich," appeared on Nightline and other media outlets discussing neo-Nazi topics, and recruited members from his South Philadelphia neighborhood.
During his incarceration, Meeink began to reconsider his beliefs, influenced by his African American teammates on a prison football league. After his parole, he left the white supremacy movement. The Oklahoma City bombing motivated him to work against hate, leading him to speak on behalf of the Anti-Defamation League and appear on MTV and other national networks. Meeink has participated in the national lecture circuit, sharing his experiences with students, educators, community leaders, government officials, and individuals dealing with alcoholism and addiction. He has testified before the United States Congress regarding neo-Nazi efforts to infiltrate law enforcement.
Meeink's life story contributed to the development of Derek Vinyard, the protagonist in the film "American History X," portrayed by Edward Norton. Meeink has stated that the film is a fictionalized account rather than a direct biography. He authored the memoir "Autobiography of a Recovering Skinhead," detailing his involvement in the neo-Nazi movement and his journey away from hate and addiction. Meeink also appeared in the independent thriller "The Experiment," based on Philip Zimbardo's Stanford prison experiment.
Meeink coaches youth roller hockey teams that have won national championships and has held support roles with professional ice hockey teams. He founded Harmony Through Hockey and is a member of the Against Violent Extremism Network. Meeink has served as a member, consultant, and speaker for various nonprofit organizations focused on preventing hatred and violence. He was recognized as one of three Civil Rights Heroes by the Anti-Defamation League during the Voices In Harmony: Houston in Concert Against Hate event.
A DNA test revealed Meeink's Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, which led him to explore Jewish traditions and practices. Meeink's transformation from neo-Nazi gang leader to civil rights advocate and observant Jew has been the subject of public discussion and media coverage, highlighting issues of extremism, hate prevention, and personal change.
