Frances Haugen is a data scientist and algorithmic product management specialist recognized for her role as a corporate whistleblower in the technology industry. Haugen holds a degree in electrical and computer engineering from Olin College and an MBA from Harvard. Her career includes work on ranking algorithms at Google, Pinterest, Yelp, and Facebook, where she was recruited as a product manager to address election risks and misinformation within the Civic Integrity unit before transitioning to counterespionage.
Haugen disclosed to CBS's "60 Minutes" that her interest in combating misinformation was influenced by personal experiences with the impact of online conspiracy theories. During her tenure at Facebook, Haugen observed that the company prioritized profits over public safety. She resigned and subsequently provided tens of thousands of pages of internal documents to the U.S. Congress, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Wall Street Journal. Reporting based on these disclosures, including the Wall Street Journal's "The Facebook Files," revealed internal research on the addictive nature of Facebook's platform and the effects of Instagram on teen girls and body image. Haugen also alleged that Facebook's actions contributed to the January 6 U.S. Capitol riot by reversing safeguards against misinformation after the 2020 election.
Haugen has testified before the U.S. Congress, UK and EU Parliaments, and the French Senate and National Assembly, engaging with lawmakers on social media regulation and platform accountability. She advocates for social media reform, transparency, and increased legislation to address the negative externalities of technology platforms. Haugen's memoir, "The Power of One," outlines her journey from high school debate to Silicon Valley and details her decision to come forward as a whistleblower.
