DeShuna Spencer Biography
DeShuna Elisa Spencer is a journalist-turned-entrepreneur and social impact executive recognized as the founder and CEO of kweliTV, a global streaming service and digital media company based in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area that focuses on the global Black experience. A former journalist who identified the connection between media images and implicit bias early in her career, Spencer built kweliTV around a mission rooted in truth. The company's name is derived from the Swahili term kweli, meaning truth. The platform features global Black stories through curated independent films, documentaries, web series, kids shows, animation, audio stories, and live experiences.
Before launching kweliTV, Spencer developed a multifaceted career in media and communications. She served as founding publisher of emPowermagazine.com, where she launched the emPower Players Awards honoring community activists of color, and was a radio host at DC's 89.3 FM WPFW. Prior to her entrepreneurial work, Spencer served as director of communications for EdMarket, overseeing the department and all media properties, including its magazine, e-newsletters, social media, advertising sales, video initiatives, and budget. Her journalism credits include bylines in The Clarion-Ledger, The Oakland Tribune, and The Crisis Magazine. She also directed her first documentary, "Mom Interrupted," which examines gun violence through the stories of mothers of murdered young Black men and women. The film screened at the Alexandria Film Festival.
Spencer started kweliTV after receiving an initial $20,000 grant from Unity Journalists, and the platform launched out of beta after winning first place at the Harvard Africa Business New Venture Competition and securing its first micro-investment from TEDCO. She was accepted into the inaugural Google Play Apps Accelerator, a selective program that included just 38 companies. The Digital Diversity Network named Spencer the Innovation & Inclusion Social Entrepreneur of the Year, and her company is a Black Ambition Prize winner and an alum of Andreessen Horowitz's Talent x Opportunity Accelerator.
Spencer is featured in the book "How We Fight White Supremacy" as one of more than 60 Black organizers, artists, journalists, and entrepreneurs combating white supremacy through their work. She is a Halcyon Incubator Fellow, a Voqal Fellow, and a Google NexGen Policy Leader. Spencer and her 501(c)(3) partner, the Black Indie Creatives Coalition, launched Black.Indie.Ignite., a two-day gathering designed to support Black indie filmmakers, immersive creators, and creative technologists. Her work has been featured in outlets including CNN Business, TIME, Fast Company, Bloomberg, Blavity, and Refinery29. Through kweliTV and her broader advocacy, Spencer has established herself as a leading voice in the areas of authentic representation, media equity, and the empowerment of Black storytellers worldwide.
