Derrick Coleman Biography
Derrick Coleman is a former NFL fullback recognized as the first legally deaf offensive player to compete in the National Football League. Coleman lost his hearing at age 3 due to a genetic disorder and became the first legally deaf individual in NFL history to play on the offensive side of the ball. He developed lip-reading skills at a young age, which proved essential to his success in football.
Coleman played high school football as a fullback and earned a scholarship to UCLA, where he appeared in 48 games, scored 19 touchdowns, earned his degree, and was named second-team All-Pac-12. Despite his achievements, Coleman was not selected in the NFL Draft. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings and was later released before joining the Seattle Seahawks. Coleman contributed to Seattle's first Super Bowl victory against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. He later played for the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals.
Coleman appeared in a Duracell commercial that highlighted his journey as a deaf athlete, bringing national attention to his story. He authored the memoir "No Excuses: Growing Up Deaf and Achieving My Super Bowl Dreams," detailing his experiences overcoming adversity in professional football. Coleman is also known for his work as a motivational speaker and advocate for deaf and hard-of-hearing youth. Through the Derrick L. Coleman Jr. Foundation, also known as the No Excuses Foundation, he works to empower young people with hearing loss.
Coleman has shared his story with schools, hearing-impaired communities, and athletic organizations, including the Phoenix School for the Deaf. He later transitioned to a role off the field as assistant to player engagement with the Green Bay Packers, where he supports current players in navigating life in the NFL. Coleman's career in professional football and advocacy for the deaf community highlight his commitment to breaking barriers in sports and supporting inclusion and accessibility.
