David and Tamela Mann Biography
David and Tamela Mann are a gospel music and entertainment duo whose partnership spans decades of faith, family, and creative achievement. Both Texas natives, the couple met as teenagers and began their performing careers singing with Kirk Franklin in a gospel group that evolved into Kirk Franklin and The Family. They have been married since 1988 and were both members of Kirk Franklin's vocal ensemble The Family before collaborating with Tyler Perry. Gospel music has remained central to their work, and they are also recognized for their film and television appearances, particularly in the Tyler Perry franchise.
Tamela Mann is known for her contributions to gospel music. She launched her solo career with the release of the album "Gotta Keep Movin'," followed by "The Master Plan." Her third studio album, "Best Days," reached No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart and earned Gold certification from the RIAA. Her fourth album, "One Way," also topped the Billboard Gospel Albums chart and featured the single "God Provides," which earned a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance/Song. She holds the record for the most No. 1 singles on the Billboard Gospel Airplay chart, with 10 songs reaching the top, including "Take Me to the King," which spent 25 weeks at No. 1. She received the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award at the Stellar Gospel Music Awards and was inducted into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame.
David Mann has built a career as an actor, comedian, and producer. He is best known for his role as Mr. Brown in Tyler Perry's plays, films, and television series. An NAACP Image Award winner, he is recognized for his role as Leroy Brown in Tyler Perry's Madea films and the television show "Meet the Browns." He has received NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for "Meet the Browns" and Outstanding Reality Program for "The Manns." His comedic performances have also been recognized with the GMA Grady Nutt Humor Award. As a producer, David has contributed to many of Tamela's albums, earning multiple Dove Award wins for his production work.
Together, David and Tamela Mann have developed a series of joint ventures. They created Tillymann Entertainment, a platform for their projects in entertainment. They released "Us Against the World," their first collaborative album as a duo, and the companion book received an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work. Tamela appeared in "A Madea Homecoming" on Netflix and was cast in "The Color Purple," a film adaptation of the stage musical. The duo was honored at the BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards. Their shared mission is to encourage couples to foster healthy, long-term relationships, a message that resonates with audiences who have followed their journey through faith, gospel music, and family.
