Charlie Day Biography
Charles Peckham Day was born in New York City and raised in Middletown, Rhode Island. He grew up in a musically rich household: his mother, Mary Peckham, is a piano teacher, and his father, Dr. Thomas Charles Day, was a professor of music at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. Day plays both piano and guitar and has Italian, Irish and English ancestry.
He attended Merrimack College in Massachusetts, where he studied art history. After graduating, Day began his acting career at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and in small television roles. Like many early-career performers, he supported himself through a range of jobs, including waiting tables and working phone banks for a telethon selling a Motown anthology. He secured his first agent after performing a comedic blues song he wrote for a cabaret night.
Day’s breakthrough came in 2005, when he pitched a home video created with friends Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton. The project evolved into "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia," which debuted that year and became one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms in television history. Day stars in the series and also serves as an executive producer and writer. His film career gained wider recognition with his breakout role in "Horrible Bosses" (2011) and then "The Lego Movie" (2014), helping establish him as a leading comedic voice in both television and film.
