Charles Dance Biography
Charles Dance is an English actor, screenwriter, and film director known for his portrayals of authoritative and intellectually complex characters across stage, film, and television. Dance began his career with the Royal Shakespeare Company, making his London debut in "Hamlet." He gained widespread recognition through his role in Granada Television's miniseries "The Jewel in the Crown," where he played a colonial soldier navigating romance and intrigue during the final days of the British Raj. This performance established Dance as a prominent figure in prestige drama and set the foundation for a career spanning more than five decades.
Dance's film career encompasses a diverse range of roles in both period dramas and contemporary cinema. He made his feature film debut in the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" and has appeared in critically acclaimed films such as "Michael Collins," "Gosford Park," "The Imitation Game," "Mank," and "The King's Man." The cast of "Gosford Park" received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast. In "Mank," Dance portrayed William Randolph Hearst, acting alongside Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried. In addition to acting, Dance wrote and directed the film "Ladies in Lavender," starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith.
On television, Dance has earned two Emmy Award nominations for his performances in major productions. He played Mr. Tulkinghorn in "Bleak House," earning a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, and portrayed Lord Mountbatten in "The Crown," receiving a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Dance is widely recognized for his role as Tywin Lannister in HBO's "Game of Thrones," a performance that brought him international acclaim. He also lent his voice to the character Emhyr var Emreis in the video game "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt."
Dance has continued to take on a variety of ambitious projects throughout his career. He received a Critics' Circle Best Actor award for his stage performance as C. S. Lewis in William Nicholson's "Shadowlands." He appeared in the Netflix adaptation of "The Sandman" and starred as Michelangelo in the BBC docu-drama Renaissance: The Blood and the Beauty. For his contributions to drama, Dance was appointed an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II. His career bridges classical theatre, blockbuster cinema, and prestige television, making him a significant figure in dramatic performance, British film, and television.
