Ben David Biography
Benjamin R. David is the CEO and chief legal counsel of the Community Justice Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he leads efforts to connect survivors of trauma, domestic violence and other forms of victimization with legal, social and community-based services. He retired in September 2024 after 25 years in the New Hanover and Pender County District Attorney’s Office, including 20 years as the elected district attorney. His current work builds on a career focused on crime prevention, victim advocacy and community-centered approaches to justice.
Before entering public service in 1999, David worked as an associate attorney in the trademark litigation section of the intellectual property group at Petree Stockton, now Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton. He graduated from the University of Florida, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa member, and earned his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class.
David is a nationally recognized speaker on criminal justice, community safety and the underlying causes of crime. He is a past president of the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys and has held leadership positions with the National District Attorneys Association. His public service has included the North Carolina Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism, the Governor’s Gang Task Force and the Chief Justice’s Task Force on ACEs-Informed Courts. He is also a founding member of Law Enforcement Leaders to Reduce Crime and Incarceration and the Blue Ribbon Commission on the Prevention of Youth Violence in Wilmington.
An author and educator, David wrote "Crime and Community in the Cape Fear: A Prosecutor’s Guide to a Healthier Hometown," drawing on significant legal cases to explore ways to build safer communities. He teaches at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and has served as a certified law enforcement instructor at Cape Fear Community College. His TEDx Airlie presentation, "Fixing the Bridge: Treating the Root Causes of Crime," reflects his emphasis on addressing the social conditions that contribute to crime. He has also provided criminal justice commentary on "Today," PBS NewsHour and "Dateline NBC," and has addressed national and international audiences on criminal justice reform, domestic violence, youth violence and community-based prosecution.
