Barbara Kruger is a conceptual artist and collagist associated with The Pictures Generation. Much of Kruger's work features black-and-white photographs overlaid with declarative captions in white-on-red Futura Bold Oblique or Helvetica Ultra Condensed text. The phrases in her pieces often use pronouns such as "you," "your," "I," "we," and "they," addressing themes of power, identity, consumerism, and sexuality. Kruger is recognized for her integration of typography and imagery to convey feminist cultural activism. Her works examine stereotypes and the practices of industrialism with text layered over mass media images.
Kruger lives and works in New York and Los Angeles. She serves as Distinguished Professor of New Genres at the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture.
