Ashanti Biography
Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas, known professionally as Ashanti, is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, actress, and entrepreneur recognized for her contributions to R&B and hip-hop soul. Ashanti rose to prominence in the early 2000s after working as a backup singer for Jennifer Lopez and signing with Irv Gotti at Murder Inc. Records. She became the first female artist to simultaneously hold the top two positions on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart with "Foolish" and "What's Luv?" and was the second artist after the Beatles to have her first three charting singles in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.
Ashanti's self-titled debut album, "Ashanti," debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard Top 200 and R&B album charts, setting a SoundScan record for the highest first-week sales by a debut female artist and earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The album achieved triple platinum status and earned her the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. Subsequent albums, including "Chapter II," "Concrete Rose," and "The Declaration," maintained her commercial success. After parting ways with Murder Inc., Ashanti released "Braveheart" independently, marking her fifth Top Ten studio album. She has been recognized among Billboard's Top Females of the Decade from 2000–2010 and has achieved Hot 100 chart entries across three decades.
Ashanti has released six studio albums and received multiple honors, including eight Billboard Awards, one Grammy, two American Music Awards, two Soul Train Awards, and six ASCAP Awards. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ashanti contributed to "The Hamilton Mixtape," collaborating with artists such as Sia, John Legend, and Usher. She is also the author of the children's book "My Name Is a Story," inspired by her personal experiences. In the technology sector, Ashanti became the first Black woman to co-found and own a Web3 tech company, EQ Exchange.
In addition to her music career, Ashanti has appeared in television series such as "The Proud Family," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Army Wives," "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch," and "American Dreams," as well as films including "Coach Carter," "Resident Evil: Extinction," and "John Tucker Must Die." She has served as Ambassador for the Jumpstart Reading Program and as Youth of the Year Ambassador for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Ashanti remains an influential figure in the entertainment industry, known for her work in R&B music, songwriting, and acting.
