Angélica Dass Biography
Angélica Dass is a Brazilian photographer based in Madrid, Spain, whose work operates at the intersection of art, sociological research, and human rights advocacy. Dass holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and a master's degree in photography from EFTI School of Photography in Madrid. Her practice integrates photography with sociological inquiry and public engagement, focusing on global human rights issues.
Dass is recognized as the creator of "Humanæ," an ongoing photographic project that examines the concept of skin color and challenges traditional racial labels. "Humanæ" documents the diversity of human skin tones by extracting an 11-by-11-pixel sample from each subject's face and matching it to a Pantone color, which is used as the background for each portrait. The project features more than 4,500 images and continues to expand, highlighting the uniqueness and diversity of humanity.
Her work has been exhibited in over 50 cities worldwide, including venues such as PhotoEspaña, World Economic Forum in Davos, UN Habitat III, London Migration Museum, American Museum of Natural History, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and Dublin Science Gallery. Dass's photography has appeared in National Geographic, Time Magazine, and Foreign Affairs. She has been recognized by Time Magazine as one of the "Nine Brazilian Photographers to Watch" and received the Red Cross Gold Medal for her artistic contributions. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, Alcobendas Arts Center, Tel Aviv University Museum, María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, and Bibliothèque Nationale of Paris.
Dass delivered a TED Talk titled "The Beauty of Human Skin in Every Color," which explores the impact of skin color on perception and social interaction. The talk has garnered more than 2 million views, underscoring the influence of her work in promoting dialogue and challenging cultural prejudices. Dass has lectured at institutions such as the University of Salamanca, University of Bologna, Tate Modern, National Geographic, and the World Economic Forum.
She is the author of the children's photobook "The Colors We Share," published by Aperture, and collaborated with the publisher to develop an educational curriculum used in New York City public schools.
