Angela Burt-Murray Biography
Angela Burt-Murray is an American journalist, author, and screenwriter whose career encompasses magazine publishing, book authorship, and television production. Burt-Murray served as editor-in-chief of Essence magazine and held editorial positions at Glamour, Teen People, and Honey magazines. She graduated from Hampton University in Virginia with a degree in finance and transitioned from a planned career in banking to media, establishing a significant presence in Black women's publishing.
Burt-Murray guided Essence magazine as editor-in-chief, overseeing editorial content and expanding the brand's reach. Under her leadership, Essence increased its circulation and grew its audience across print and digital platforms. She also expanded the Essence brand into books, live events, and co-branded news and entertainment specials for CNN and TV ONE. During her tenure, Burt-Murray interviewed public figures including President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Bono, Issa Rae, Tyler Perry, Oprah, and Beyoncé.
As an author, Burt-Murray co-wrote "The Vow," which was adapted into the Lifetime movie "With This Ring" starring Gabrielle Union, Regina Hall, and Jill Scott. She also co-authored the humor book "The Angry Black Woman's Guide to Life" and the thriller "Games Divas Play," which was optioned for television by BET and became the TV series "Games People Play" starring Lauren London. Her work demonstrates an ability to develop narratives across books, film, and television, reflecting expertise in media, entertainment, and storytelling.
Burt-Murray has developed movies and TV series for BET, OWN, Lifetime, and Netflix, and is the creator, writer, and producer of the TV series "Hush" on AMC's AllBLK. She has been recognized by Crain's New York Business in its "40 Under 40" feature and appears regularly on CNN, The Steve Harvey Morning Show, Good Morning America, MSNBC, and The Today Show. Burt-Murray is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and has served on the board of Planned Parenthood Southeast.
