Alex Garland Biography
Alex Garland is an English author, screenwriter, and filmmaker whose work encompasses novels, screenplays, video games, and film and television direction. Garland gained recognition as a novelist with "The Beach," which was later adapted into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. After working on the adaptation of his novel, Garland transitioned from writing novels to screenwriting and directing, developing a body of work that frequently explores the impact of technology on society, the human body, and the collapse of utopian ideals.
Garland wrote screenplays for films such as "28 Days Later," "Sunshine," "Never Let Me Go," and "Dredd." His interest in science fiction and fantasy genres led to his directorial debut with "Ex Machina," a film examining artificial intelligence. "Ex Machina" earned Garland an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and received three BIFA Awards for Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best British Independent Film. He also received the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film for this project.
Garland's second film, "Annihilation," based on the novel by Jeff VanderMeer, received critical acclaim. He expanded into television with the miniseries "Devs," which he wrote and directed for FX and Hulu. Garland continued to explore new genres, including the war genre with A24's "Civil War." Inspired by political polarization, "Civil War" achieved commercial success, earning $127 million at the box office against a $50 million budget.
Garland co-directed "Warfare" with Iraq war veteran Ray Mendoza. The film, based on Mendoza's experiences in the Iraq War, follows a platoon of American Navy SEALs after a surveillance mission goes wrong. Garland also contributed as writer and producer for Danny Boyle's "28 Years Later" and is involved in the adaptation of "Elden Ring" for A24. Throughout his career, Garland has consistently created stories that examine technology, society, and human conflict across literature, film, television, and video games.
