Al Del Greco Biography
Al Del Greco is the Head Men's Golf Coach at Samford University, a position he's held since 2014, leading the team to success while also being a noted sports radio personality and former high school coach in the Birmingham, AL area, continuing his career in sports after his long NFL tenure.
He is a former NFL placekicker who played 17 seasons and scored 1,592 points, making 347 of 449 field goals (77%) and 551 of 554 extra points (99%). As of 2009, he ranked 14th on the NFL’s all-time scoring list. Known as “Automatic Al,” he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and is widely regarded by fans and analysts as one of the greatest kickers in NFL history.
A four-year letterman at Auburn University, Del Greco made 110 of 111 extra points and set Southeastern Conference records for field goal attempts and makes in a single game, going six of seven against Kentucky in 1982. As of 2016, he shares the Auburn single-game field goal record with Daniel Carlson, and his 236 career points rank fifth on the school’s career scoring list.
After his playing career, Del Greco worked as a coach at Spain Park High School in Hoover, Alabama, serving as boys golf coach and kicking coach for the football team. His son, Trey, was the team’s placekicker before earning a golf scholarship to Vanderbilt University. In 2003, Del Greco joined the Birmingham Steeldogs as a kicking coach.
Del Greco was the Tennessee Titans’ starting kicker in Super Bowl XXXIV, in which the team lost 23-16 to the St. Louis Rams. He made one field goal in the game, tying the score at 16-16. As of 2016, he co-hosts The Opening Drive on WJOX in Birmingham, Alabama, with Jay Barker and Tony Kurre.
