Abby Lee Miller Biography
Abby Lee Miller, a dance instructor, choreographer, television personality, and author, has a rich background in dance. Early in her career, she founded the Abby Lee Dance Company in 1986 and later became certified by Dance Masters of America, becoming a member of Dance Masters of Pennsylvania Chapter #10. Her journey in dance paved the way for her involvement in the reality television show "Dance Moms," which premiered in 2011 and ran until 2019. Her experience and expertise in dance also led to her guest judging on "Dancing with the Stars" and authoring a book in 2014 titled "Everything I Learned about Life, I Learned in Dance Class."
Miller's career expanded further when she opened a new studio called ALDC LA in Los Angeles in 2015. However, her journey was not without its challenges. In 2010, Miller filed for bankruptcy after owing more than $400,000 in back taxes to the IRS. Her financial situation improved when she was hired for "Dance Moms" in 2011. In 2015, the DOJ indicted her for fraud. In 2017, Miller was sentenced to one year and a day in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release.
Despite her legal and personal challenges, including a battle with Burkitt lymphoma in 2018, which fortunately went into remission later that year, Miller continues to contribute to the dance community. She returned to "Dance Moms" for the show's eighth season in 2019 and has appeared in other TV shows like "Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition" and "Abby's Studio Rescue." Despite the challenges and controversies, Miller's influence in the dance world remains notable.
