Abbey Curran

Keynote Speaker: Motivational Speaker & Disability Advocate; Founder of Miss You Can Do It Pageant; Author of "Dancing in the Rain"

Abbey Curran Biography

Abbey Curran is an American beauty pageant titleholder, motivational speaker, author, and disability advocate recognized as the first person with a disability to compete in the Miss USA pageant. Curran was born with cerebral palsy, a condition affecting muscle tone, posture, and movement. Despite early predictions that she would never walk without assistance, she pursued physical training and earned the Miss Iowa title, becoming the first woman with a disability to win a major state title in the Miss USA system.

Curran gained national attention for her participation in the Miss USA pageant, where she became the first contestant with a disability to compete at that level. Her involvement highlighted the challenges and barriers faced by people with disabilities in the beauty and fashion industries. Curran has stated her goal was to normalize the presence of contestants with disabilities in pageantry. Her story received coverage on CBS's "The Early Show," "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," "Access Hollywood," CNN Headline News, and "Fox & Friends." She was also featured in People Magazine.

Drawing from her personal experiences, Curran founded the "Miss You Can Do It Pageant," a national event for young women with disabilities. She serves as chairwoman of the nonprofit organization, which aims to promote inclusion and empowerment. The HBO documentary film "Miss You Can Do It" chronicles her work with the pageant and has expanded awareness of disability advocacy and inclusion.

Curran is the author of the book "Dancing in the Rain," which explores themes of resilience and self-belief. She holds a bachelor's degree in business communications from Saint Ambrose University and works as a pharmaceutical sales professional. As a keynote speaker, Curran addresses topics such as resilience, self-confidence, and redefining possibilities at civic, corporate, and educational events. She has served as an Easter Seals ambassador and has spoken on behalf of organizations including United Cerebral Palsy and the Centers for Disease Control, contributing to ongoing conversations about disability advocacy and inclusion.
