Human Rights Activist, Modern Anti-Slavery Expert & Founder of Made in a Free World
Justin Dillon is an artist, entrepreneur, public speaker and abolitionist. While enjoying a successful career as a musician, Justin encountered a New York Times article highlighting the modern-day slave trade. Just a few months later, while touring Europe, he met a number of girls who were coming to his shows that were being solicited by human traffickers. He immediately started doing all he could to help by writing songs and holding benefit concerts. What he found was a movement that was low on awareness and was providing very little opportunities for everyday individuals to make a difference. Justin decided the best way he could contribute was to pull his music community into the movement. In 2008, he made his directorial debut in the film, CALL+RESPONSE. This "rockumentary" film was theatrically distributed and became one of that year's top documentaries. The film combined commentary by social luminaries, such as Cornel West, Madeleine Albright, and Nicholas Kristof, with moving musical performances by artists such as Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Cold War Kids, and Matisyahu. The film went on to be used around the world to bring awareness and solicit action.
Justin followed up by producing the CNN documentary, Common Dreams. In the film Justin and Grammy award- winning hip-hop artist, Common, travel to Haiti to experience for themselves the plight of the estimated 300,000 children working as domestic servants. The film aired worldwide to over 240 million homes.
In 2011, Justin partnered with the U.S. State Department to produce the website www.SlaveryFootprint.org. The ground breaking online survey asks the world one question, "How Many Slaves Work For You?". The website and associated mobile app, allow consumers to visualize how their consumption habits are connected to modern-day slavery and provides them with an opportunity to have a conversation with the companies that manufacture the goods they purchase. It went on to win multiple awards, including SXSW and Cannes. Last year, President Obama acknowledged Justin's organization, Made In A Free World, in his speech on slavery to the Clinton Global Initiative. In addition to creating and developing the online tools, Slavery Footprint is also engaged in off-line community education, mobilization programs, supply chain assessment, and on-the-ground projects working to end slavery in our lifetime.
Justin has appeared on and been covered by CNN, Katie Couric, Dr. Phil, MSNBC, New York Times, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Ad Week, CBS, Fox, NPR, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Fast Company and others. He has spoken at the White House, United Nations, Clinton Global Initiative, Global Philanthropy Forum, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, and many other venues. He has also served on advisory groups for the United Nations, U.S. State Department and White House.
