Tommy Chong Biography
Tommy Chong is a Canadian-American comedian, actor, musician, and activist whose career spans more than six decades in counterculture entertainment. As one-half of the comedy duo Cheech and Chong, Chong is recognized for his stand-up performances, acting, and directing. His stage and screen persona—a deeply narcotized but philosophical stoner—contrasts with Richard Marin's talkative Cheech in a series of Grammy-winning comedy albums and films. Chong and Marin's comedy highlighted the absurdity of mainstream America's response to the drug culture of the 1970s and the unique logic of the marijuana lifestyle.
The duo released eight albums, earning the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording for "Los Cochinos," and three albums reached the top 10. Their success in comedy albums led to a film career, beginning with "Up in Smoke," which Chong co-wrote with Marin. Chong also directed four of the duo's films and co-wrote and starred in all seven. Beyond film, Chong is widely known for playing Leo on Fox's "That '70s Show," a recurring role that introduced him to a new generation of fans. He later reprised the character in the American teen sitcom "That '90s Show."
Chong transitioned from counterculture figure to entrepreneur, becoming actively involved in the cannabis industry. He launched a line of branded products and accessories through his company, Chong's Choice, and has promoted responsible cannabis use. Chong frequently speaks at cannabis events and conventions, using his platform to educate about the benefits of cannabis. His advocacy extends to cannabis legalization, environmental conservation, and social justice.
Chong has faced legal and health challenges, including serving nine months in prison, which made him a prominent figure among marijuana advocates. He has also been diagnosed with prostate and rectal cancer, undergoing surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Throughout his health journey, Chong spoke openly about his experiences, adding cancer survivor to his list of identities, which also includes comedian, actor, musician, cannabis activist, and "Dancing with the Stars" contestant. His public approach to adversity and humor has deepened his connection with audiences.
Chong continues to engage audiences through live performances and comedy tours, often reuniting with Cheech Marin for special events and shows. A Grammy Award winner and recipient of the High Times Lifetime Achievement Award, Chong remains a prominent voice in American comedy, known for his irreverence, wit, and authenticity.
