Sousan Abadian Biography
Sousan Abadian, Ph.D., has spent her life exploring what it means for people and nations to develop, to become prosperous and at peace, and what it takes for people to innovate and exercise breakthrough leadership from wherever they stand. She has been described as a modern-day alchemist who teaches how to transmute despair, loss and betrayal into the courage to boldly advance in the direction of our deepest aspirations. Her mission is to live and demonstrate that we are all powerful creators—that regardless of our circumstances, we can transcend victim identity and live a life of mastery and joy. Her infectious sense of adventure reignites her audience’s passion to live their greatest lives, to innovate and create in ways they never thought possible.
In addition to her work as a leadership consultant and transformational executive coach, she is also an internationally acclaimed expert in healing collective trauma. Having plumbed the depths of trauma, Abadian brings a deeper understanding of what it takes for individuals and cultures to become healthy, resilient and innovative. Her work has been featured in Harvard Magazine, and she holds two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. (in political economy and government) from Harvard University.
Born in Tehran, Iran, and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, she has traveled extensively and considers herself a global citizen. With feet planted in diverse worlds, Abadian has command of a vast and unique field of experience. She has worked internationally with nonprofits, government officials, religious leaders, tribal chiefs, conflict resolution experts and communities on the ground to liberate themselves and their communities from historical baggage, constricting beliefs and habitual patterns, to create lives and cultures that are resilient and flourishing.
Abadian has dedicated her life to answering the question of what it would take to uplift humanity and alleviate suffering. She began her inquiry as a young woman in the field of international development and poverty alleviation. Her earlier research examined culturally appropriate and gender-sensitive economic development strategies in non-Western contexts. In the early 1980s, she traveled to Bangladesh to research BRAC, Grameen Bank and other effective micro-lending enterprises and methods of income generation for the poorest of poor, mostly women and children.
Her research interest in population policies was a natural outgrowth of her concern for the welfare of impoverished women, their children and the natural environment. She was among the pioneers who wrote about the importance of investing in women’s health and education as a means to reduce fertility, and in Women’s Autonomy and Its Impact on Fertility, a lead article for World Development (1996), she provided an econometric analysis to demonstrate that reducing population worldwide requires the empowerment of women. She also surmised that increasing the autonomy of women requires leadership to initiate and sustain the necessary cultural changes.
Increasingly, she began to focus on how conditioned behavior and mindsets—beliefs and narratives—keep people stuck in dysfunctional patterns. In her doctoral work at Harvard, principally supervised by Nobel laureate in economics Amartya Sen, Abadian utilized the example of tribal communities in the U.S. and Canada to demonstrate the ways in which unhealed collective trauma instills a particular toxic mindset and corresponding set of behaviors, which can keep communities stuck in generational cycles of poverty and violence. In From Wasteland to Homeland: Trauma and the Renewal of Indigenous Peoples and Their Communities, she described how individuals are exercising leadership and communities are breaking through destructive cycles.
