Scott Borchetta Biography
Scott Borchetta is an American record executive and entrepreneur recognized for his significant contributions to the country music industry. Borchetta began his career at MTM Records and gained experience in promotion and artist development at major labels including MCA Nashville Records, DreamWorks Nashville, and Universal Music Nashville. He later founded Big Machine Records in partnership with Show Dog Records. Taylor Swift was the first artist signed to the label, which launched with a staff of 13.
Under Borchetta's leadership, Big Machine Records expanded to include four imprints: Big Machine Records, Nashville Harbor Records & Entertainment, The Valory Music Co., and Nash Icon Records. The label achieved commercial success, selling more than 220 million albums and producing over 200 singles that reached No. 1. Borchetta signed artists such as Tim McGraw, Jewel, Lady A, Zac Brown Band, Thomas Rhett, and Florida Georgia Line. He also negotiated a landmark agreement with iHeartRadio, establishing the first U.S. terrestrial radio performance right for artists and labels.
Borchetta sold Big Machine Records to Ithaca Holdings LLC, owned by Scooter Braun, for $300 million. Following the acquisition of Ithaca Holdings by HYBE, Borchetta continued as CEO of Big Machine Label Group before departing HYBE America and retaining the Big Machine Records name. He has announced plans to focus on country and Americana music through a new publishing company and a combined staff across Big Machine Records and Nashville Harbor.
Beyond the recording industry, Borchetta served as an in-house mentor on "American Idol" during its 14th and 15th seasons. He is also active in motorsports as a driver in the Trans-Am Series and owner of the NASCAR Xfinity Series team Big Machine Racing. Borchetta promotes the Music City Grand Prix IndyCar race at Nashville Superspeedway, now known as the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix.
Borchetta has been recognized on Billboard Power 100 and Fast Company 100 Most Creative People in Business. His honors include the Music Business Association's Presidential Award for Outstanding Executive, the Country Radio Broadcasters President's Award, the Bob Kingsley Living Legend Award, and induction into the T.J. Martell Foundation Circle of Legends.
Middle Tennessee State University renamed its College of Media and Entertainment as the Scott Borchetta College of Media and Entertainment in recognition of Borchetta's support, which has resulted in technological upgrades and experiential learning opportunities for students, including trips to the Grammy Awards.
