Sasha Alexander Biography
Sasha Alexander is a nonbinary trans, Black/South Asian artist, poet, educator, abolitionist, and community organizer whose work focuses on racial justice, gender liberation, and media activism. Alexander has contributed to LGBTQIA+ advocacy, youth empowerment, media justice, economic justice, and racial equity for more than 20 years. Their activism began in high school with the founding of a Gender and Sexuality Alliance and involvement in GLSEN student organizing and anti-oppression facilitation. Alexander has served as a facilitator, educator, and media maker with organizations such as GSA Network, Brown Boi Project, Global Action Project, and Tribeca Film Institute.
Alexander is recognized as the founder of Black Trans Media, an organization established in Brooklyn to address racism and transphobia through arts, media, education, and organizing. Black Trans Media was created following the violent attack on Islan Nettles, a Black trans woman in Harlem, and centers the leadership and narratives of Black trans and gender nonconforming communities. The organization launched its work under the hashtag #BlackTransEverything and is among the first Black trans-specific organizations to emerge in New York City.
Alexander was named to the inaugural Trans 100 for organizing and media-based work in trans communities of color and was recognized on The Root 100 list. In addition to leading Black Trans Media, Alexander serves as membership director at Sylvia Rivera Law Project in New York City, co-directing the Movement Building Team to strengthen the leadership of trans, gender nonconforming, and intersex people, with a focus on low-income individuals, people of color, disabled people, formerly incarcerated individuals, people living with HIV, and immigrants.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Alexander integrates poetry, film, and cultural organizing as tools for social change. Their work includes organizing cultural and community events such as "Transgiving," an annual anti-colonial feast, and "Trans-Africanism: A Trans Pan-African Kwanzaa Celebration." Alexander's contributions as a speaker, poet, and organizer address the intersections of race, gender, and systemic injustice, engaging audiences across the country in conversations about social transformation.
