Ryan Murphy Biography
Ryan Murphy is recognized as one of the leading backstroke swimmers in American swimming history. A multiple Olympic gold medalist, Murphy is noted for his underwater technique and consistent performances, establishing a strong presence in backstroke events at both national and international competitions. While competing for the University of California, Berkeley, Murphy won both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events at the NCAA Championships for four consecutive years, becoming the fourth man in NCAA history to sweep both distances of one stroke throughout his collegiate career, joining John Naber, Pablo Morales, and Brendan Hansen. Murphy was named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year for three consecutive years and received the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, which honors a senior who demonstrates excellence in both athletics and academics.
Murphy achieved a sweep of the men's 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke Olympic gold medals at the Rio Games, and contributed to the 4x100-meter medley relay team alongside Michael Phelps, Nathan Adrian, and Cody Miller, securing another gold medal. His 51.85-second backstroke leg in the relay set a world record. Murphy also set an Olympic record in the men's 200-meter backstroke, marking the first American double in those events since Aaron Peirsol.
Murphy served as a U.S. Olympic swim team captain at the Tokyo Games, where he earned a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke, a silver in the 200-meter backstroke, and contributed to a gold medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay. At the World Championships in Fukuoka, Murphy added a gold in the 100-meter backstroke and a silver in the 200-meter backstroke. At the Paris Olympic Games, he earned three additional medals, including gold in the 4x100-meter mixed medley relay. In recognition of his achievements at the Paris Olympics, Murphy was named USA Swimming Male Athlete of the Year at the Golden Goggles Awards.
A three-time Olympian, Murphy has accumulated nine Olympic medals: five gold, two silver, and two bronze. His performance in Paris brought his fifth individual Olympic medal in backstroke, tying the all-time record among male swimmers in those events. At the Paris Games, Murphy was named co-captain of the U.S. team, contributing to the squad's eight gold medals.
Murphy is involved in water safety initiatives and co-owns a swimming school in Florida. He participates in swimming clinics and motivational speaking engagements, sharing his expertise and experience with young swimmers. Murphy's career highlights include record-breaking performances, academic recognition, and leadership within the U.S. national swimming team, making him a prominent figure in competitive swimming and athlete development.
