Richard Mullender Biography
Richard Mullender is recognized for his expertise in listening, negotiation, and human communication, developed over a career in law enforcement and crisis negotiation. After serving as a detective investigating serious crimes with the London Metropolitan Police, Mullender transitioned to hostage negotiation and was appointed lead trainer at Scotland Yard's National Hostage Negotiation and Crisis Unit. His background also includes military service prior to his work with the Metropolitan Police.
As lead trainer at Scotland Yard, Mullender advanced negotiation training by focusing on identifying motivators, values, and key words that reveal states of mind, transforming information into actionable intelligence. His experience includes negotiating with the Taliban, managing extortion threats overseas, and resolving domestic sieges. Mullender contributed to the negotiation team that secured the release of three United Nations workers held hostage in Afghanistan and provided listening expertise that supported the rescue of Norman Kember in Iraq.
