Rian Johnson Biography
Rian Johnson is an American filmmaker known for crafting tightly plotted, genre-blending stories that often subvert audience expectations. Johnson made more than 90 short films by the time he left film school and spent several years working to produce his first feature. He eventually secured funding for the teen-centric film noir "Brick," which became a success at the Sundance Film Festival and received positive reviews, grossing nearly $4 million on a $450,000 budget. Johnson's second feature, "The Brothers Bloom," demonstrated his ability to work with high-profile actors, while the science-fiction film "Looper" further established his reputation in the industry.
Johnson wrote and directed the space opera "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," which grossed over $1 billion. In television, Johnson directed three episodes of Breaking Bad—"Ozymandias," "Fly," and "Fifty-One"—earning the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing – Drama Series for "Fifty-One." These accomplishments in both film and television have positioned Johnson as a versatile and technically skilled director.
A significant chapter in Johnson's career is the "Knives Out" franchise, a series of whodunit films featuring detective Benoit Blanc. Inspired by mystery authors such as Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, "Knives Out" earned more than $312 million at the box office and garnered Johnson an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Netflix acquired the next two films in the franchise in a deal valued at $469 million. The sequel, "Glass Onion," earned Johnson an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The third installment, "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery," features an ensemble cast including Daniel Craig, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, and Kerry Washington.
In addition to his film work, Johnson created the murder mystery series "Poker Face" for Peacock, starring Natasha Lyonne. The series, which follows a casino worker with a unique ability to detect lies, received critical acclaim and Emmy nominations. Johnson has been recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world and has received honors from the Directors Guild and National Board of Review, as well as nominations from the Producers Guild, Writers Guild, Golden Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA, Spirit, and Emmy awards. Johnson is known for pushing the boundaries of genre storytelling in both film and television.
