Peter Lake Biography
Peter F. Lake is a professor of law, Charles A. Dana Chair, and director of the Center for Excellence in Higher Education Law and Policy at Stetson University College of Law. Lake, a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, teaches and writes in the areas of torts, higher education law and policy, insurance, and jurisprudence. He has received multiple awards for his teaching and scholarship in higher education law.
Lake is recognized as an expert on higher education law and policy and has been quoted or referenced in publications including New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Chicago Sun Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, Time, Newsweek, and Cosmopolitan, as well as in reported legal decisions from the supreme courts of Virginia, California, Massachusetts, and Florida, and in Restatement of the Law of Torts. He has appeared on major media networks such as NPR, ABC, and CNN. Lake has also served as the Interim Director of Title IX Compliance at Stetson University.
Lake has authored numerous law review articles and publications, including five books: "The Four Corners of Title IX Regulatory Compliance: A Primer for American Colleges and Universities," "Higher Education and the Law: Cases and Materials" (with Judith Areen), "The Rights and Responsibilities of the Modern University: The Rise of the Facilitator University," "Foundations of Higher Education Law & Policy: Basic Legal Rules, Concepts and Principles for Student Affairs," and "Beyond Discipline – Managing the Modern Higher Education Environment." He is also the editor of "Oxford Handbook of U.S. Higher Education Law," published by Oxford University Press.
Lake is a frequent speaker in the field of higher education law and policy, presenting at international, national, regional, and local meetings. He has trained campus personnel on student safety issues, including Title IX and his "Four Corners of Title IX Regulatory Compliance" framework. Lake has served on several boards, including the board of editors of Journal of College and University Law, the Center for Academic Integrity, the review board for the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center, the academic advisory board of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and the board of advisors to The Network.
In recognition of his contributions, Stetson University College of Law established the Peter F. Lake Spirit of the Law Award in his honor, and he has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at Stetson University College of Law. Lake also serves as a higher education consulting attorney for Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, as a consultant for AGB Consulting (Association of Governing Boards), and as an expert witness through his private consulting business. His work in higher education law, Title IX compliance, and student affairs continues to influence colleges and universities.
