Patrick Soon-Shiong Biography
Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong is a surgeon, scientist, inventor, and philanthropist known for his work in cancer research, medical innovation, and biotechnology. Soon-Shiong serves as executive chairman and global chief medical officer of ImmunityBio, Inc., where he has focused on developing treatments for cancer and other life-threatening diseases. His career includes pioneering therapies for diabetes and cancer, publishing more than 100 scientific papers, and holding over 675 patents in medicine, technology, and artificial intelligence.
Soon-Shiong's early clinical work at UCLA included performing the first encapsulated human islet cell transplant in Type 1 diabetic patients. He later contributed to pharmaceutical innovation in oncology, notably during his tenure at Abraxis BioScience, where the company developed the protein nanoparticle drug for breast, lung, and pancreatic cancer, "Abraxane." The Food and Drug Administration approved "Abraxane" as the first protein nanoparticle chemotherapy for these cancers, and the drug has been recognized in the medical history collections at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Soon-Shiong sold American Pharmaceutical Partners to Fresenius and Abraxis BioScience to Celgene.
Building on the science behind "Abraxane," Soon-Shiong shifted focus to next-generation immunotherapy, exploring the tumor microenvironment and the potential of orchestrating the innate and adaptive immune systems to transform cancer care. He founded ImmunityBio to develop innovative immunotherapies for oncology and infectious diseases. The company received FDA approval for "Anktiva," an immunotherapy drug for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, which activates natural killer cells to target and kill cancer cells. ImmunityBio continues to pursue expanded indications for "Anktiva," including forms of lung and pancreatic cancer.
In addition to his pharmaceutical work, Soon-Shiong leads NantWorks, a group of companies operating at the intersection of medicine, data, and artificial intelligence. He is an adjunct professor of surgery and executive director of the Wireless Health Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a visiting professor at Imperial College London and Dartmouth College. As founder of Cancer MoonShot 2020, he has led collaborations in biotechnology and healthcare to advance novel immunotherapies for cancer. Soon-Shiong's work contributed to the inspiration for the Cancer Moonshot initiative led by Vice President Joe Biden.
Soon-Shiong's contributions have been recognized by honors such as the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. He delivered the David Packard Award Lecture at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in recognition of his scientific accomplishments in cancer therapies, immunotherapy, and digital technologies for genomic information. In addition to his scientific and business endeavors, Soon-Shiong is owner and executive chairman of the Los Angeles Times, reflecting his engagement in both innovation and civic life.
