Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Biography
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, a country rock band, was formed in 1966 in Long Beach, California. The band, with some constant members such as singer-guitarist Jeff Hanna and drummer Jimmie Fadden, has played a significant role in the progression of contemporary country and roots music. Over the years, they have released successful albums like the 1972's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and the follow-up, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Volume Two." The band gained considerable exposure through performances on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" and even played Carnegie Hall as an opening act for Bill Cosby.
The band's successes include a version of Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles." In 1977, the band became the first American group allowed to tour the Soviet Union, playing 28 sold-out concerts and making a televised appearance watched by an estimated 145 million people. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band had several No. 1 country hits, including "Long Hard Road (The Sharecropper's Dream)," "Modern Day Romance," and "Fishin' in the Dark." They also performed at significant events such as the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the inaugural Farm Aid concert.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has won four Grammy Awards and a CMA award for Album of the Year in 1989. In 2015, the band commemorated their 50th anniversary with a sold-out show at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. They have been signed to various record labels throughout their career, including Capitol Records, Warner Records, United Artists Records, and MCA Records. The band's influence on the country and rock genre is undeniable, as evidenced by their membership in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame and the multiple decades of various multi-platinum and gold records they have released.
