Nicole Ari Parker Biography
Nicole Ari Parker is an American actress known for her work in film, television, and theater. Parker earned her acting degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she developed skills that led her from off-Broadway productions to major film and television roles. Her theater background includes Off-Broadway productions of "Chicago," "House of Lear," and "Romeo and Juliet."
Parker made her screen debut with a leading role in the independent film "The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love" and appeared in "Boogie Nights," directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Her performance in "Boogie Nights" contributed to the film's recognition by the Florida Film Critics Circle Award for Best Ensemble Cast.
Parker gained widespread recognition as one of the stars of the Showtime series "Soul Food," portraying a lawyer for five seasons. The show was notable as a successful African-American drama on television. For her performance, Parker received five NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. During this period, she also starred opposite Denzel Washington in the biographical film "Remember the Titans," earning an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. Parker played a television executive in the HBO film "Dancing in September" and received further Image Award nominations, as well as an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture nomination for "Brown Sugar."
On Broadway, Parker debuted as Blanche DuBois in Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire" at the Broadhurst Theater, earning an Outer Critics Award nomination. She later worked with director Emily Mann as Cleopatra in "Antony and Cleopatra" at the McCarter Theatre Center. Parker has been nominated for seven NAACP Image Awards and presented President Bill Clinton with a Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony hosted by the NAACP. She has also received a special award at the Urban World Film Festival for Outstanding Body of Work as an Actress.
Parker joined the cast of Fox's "Empire" as Giselle Barker, initially in a recurring role before becoming a series regular through the series finale. She also had a recurring role on the NBC series "Chicago P.D." and starred in the HBO Max comedy-drama series "And Just Like That..." as Lisa Todd Wexley. Parker has appeared in a variety of television series, including Fox's "Empire," TV Land's "Younger," Amazon's "The Romanoffs," and Showtime's "I'm Dying Up Here." Her career demonstrates a consistent presence in drama, comedy, and prestige television.
Parker was featured in People Magazine to introduce Sophie's Voice Foundation, a charitable organization she founded to raise awareness about spina bifida. She serves as an ambassador for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, supporting breast cancer awareness and initiatives focused on women's empowerment and social justice.
