Mississippi Mass Choir Biography
The Mississippi Mass Choir is a prominent gospel ensemble in American music, founded in Jackson by Frank Williams, a Malaco Records executive and member of the Jackson Southernaires. The choir gained recognition under the musical direction of David R. Curry. Williams invited singers from across Mississippi to submit taped vocal performances, selecting more than 100 vocalists to form the choir. He collaborated with minister of music David R. Curry Sr. and pianist Jerry C. Smith to recruit over 150 singers statewide, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds.
The choir's debut album, "Mississippi Mass Choir, Live in Jackson, MS," reached the number one position on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart for 45 weeks. The group received James Cleveland, Billboard, and Stellar awards for its achievements. Subsequent albums, including "God Gets the Glory" and "It Remains to Be Seen," also topped the charts. "It Remains to Be Seen" held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Gospel Chart for 52 weeks and received a Soul Train Music Award for best gospel album.
Following the passing of founder Frank Williams, Pastor Jerry Mannery became the choir's executive director. Under Mannery's leadership, the choir recorded albums such as "I'll See You in the Rapture," "Emmanuel: God with Us," "Amazing Love," "Not by Might Nor by Power," and "...Then Sings My Soul." The choir earned a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album by a Choir or Chorus for "I'll See You in the Rapture," along with multiple Grammy nominations, induction into the Gospel Hall of Fame, several Stellar Awards, and a Stellar Gospel Music Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Mississippi Mass Choir has performed in more than 40 states and internationally in Japan, Europe, Africa, and Greece. The choir became the first gospel ensemble to perform at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, and sang for Pope John Paul II at his summer residence during the Umbria Jazz Gospel and Soul Easter Festival in Terni, Italy. The choir has also been featured in the PBS special "Hallelujah: A Celebration of Mississippi Gospel," produced by Mississippi Public Broadcasting.
With a membership of over 200, the Mississippi Mass Choir continues to record and perform, maintaining its mission to glorify God and uplift audiences worldwide. The choir released its 11th album, "We Still Believe," featuring guest soloists Brian Courtney Wilson and Myron Butler, recorded live at Word of Life Church in Flowood, Mississippi.
