Mike Africa Jr. Biography
Mike Africa Jr. is an activist, speaker, writer, and hip-hop artist focused on civil rights, social justice, and the legacy of the MOVE Organization, a Black-led civil liberties group founded in Philadelphia. As Legacy Director of the MOVE Organization, Africa Jr. works to preserve its historical significance and advocate for justice. The son of MOVE 9 members Debbie Sims-Africa and Michael Davis Africa Sr., Africa Jr. was born in prison after his parents were charged in connection with the death of a police officer during a raid on MOVE's headquarters. He spent his early years in an orphanage, experiencing physical and mental abuse, and at age six, witnessed the aftermath of a police bombing on his family's home that resulted in the deaths of 11 family members.
Recognizing both his parents were incarcerated, Africa Jr. began a long campaign to prove their innocence, learning about the law and developing public speaking skills to garner support. His advocacy contributed to the release of his mother and father after decades of imprisonment. Africa Jr. established the MOVE Activist Archive to preserve the organization's memory, challenge prevailing narratives, and inspire future generations in the pursuit of justice. With the acquisition of 6221 Osage Avenue, the MOVE Archive operates at a site central to the organization's history.
Africa Jr. is the author of "On a Move: Philadelphia's Notorious Bombing and a Native Son's Lifelong Battle for Justice" and appears in the HBO documentary "40 Years a Prisoner." He is also featured in the Audible original docu-series "Summer of '85." His work addresses topics such as mass incarceration, police brutality, prison reform, animal rights, and climate change. Africa Jr. has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and on NPR.
A member of the Black Philly Radical Collective, Africa Jr. delivers keynote speeches that blend music and advocacy, sharing his "Never Give Up" message at venues including the Smithsonian and the University of Pennsylvania. He has addressed audiences alongside figures such as Marc Lamont Hill, Tarana Burke, Ramona Africa, Dead Prez, and Danny Glover. Through writing, public speaking, archival work, and activism, Africa Jr. works to ensure the history of the MOVE Organization and broader issues of racial injustice remain part of the national conversation.
