Michael Schur Biography

Michael Schur is a television producer, actor, and writer who has built a reputation for creating quality, entertaining television. Schur kick-started his career as a writer for "Saturday Night Live." By 2001, he was overseeing the show's Weekend Update segment, a role he held until 2004. His notable contributions to SNL earned him his first Primetime Emmy Award. Leaving SNL, he then became a producer and writer for the sitcom "The Office," where he worked until 2013. Schur is also known for his small but memorable role in "The Office" as Mose Schrute, the cousin of Dwight Schrute.

In collaboration with his "The Office" colleague Greg Daniels, Schur co-created the sitcom "Parks and Recreation," providing a mockumentary-style look at a small town's Parks Department. This innovative sitcom ran from 2009 to 2015 and earned Schur multiple award nominations. Following the conclusion of "The Office," Schur and "Parks and Recreation" writer Dan Goor co-created "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", a comedy series about a New York City police precinct that aired from 2013 to 2021. During the latter program's tenure, Schur branched out to create the sitcom "The Good Place," which chronicled the experiences of a group of four humans who die on Earth and then experience the afterlife. This inventive series ran from 2016 to 2020 and earned him an Emmy award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series in 2020 and 2021.

Aside from his widely recognized work, Schur has been involved in a variety of other projects. He served as a co-producer of the HBO show "The Comeback" and also wrote two episodes of the show. He lent his storytelling skills to "Master of None" as a producer and co-wrote an episode of "Black Mirror" with his Parks and Rec coworker, Jones. Most recently, in 2021, Schur co-created the Peacock comedy series "Rutherford Falls," and has been developing projects at IMDb TV. Apart from these, he authored a book titled "How to Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question," adding another feather to his cap. Schur has been interviewed by various publications, including The Guardian, Los Angeles Times, and Entertainment Weekly, discussing his shows and career.

Schur is not just a Harvard alumnus but also the former president of its infamous comedy paper, The Harvard Lampoon. His comedic writing and storytelling abilities have earned him high regard in the entertainment industry, and his work continues to be influential. Schur, a self-proclaimed vegetarian, finds inspiration from personalities like Woody Allen, Monty Python, David Foster Wallace, and The Simpsons, influencing his unique approach to comedy. His diverse body of work and notable accomplishments make him an intriguing figure in the realm of television comedy.
