Michael Arden Biography
Michael Arden is an actor and theater director known for his work on Broadway, particularly in musical theater. Arden began his career as a performer, appearing as Tom Sawyer in Roundabout and Deaf West Theatre's production of "Big River" and as Coyote in the Twyla Tharp-directed "The Times They Are A-Changin'." He also originated the role of Quasimodo in the American premiere of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and starred in Trevor Nunn's production of "Aspects of Love" in London.
Arden transitioned to directing with the Broadway debut of Deaf West's "Spring Awakening," a production delivered in American Sign Language alongside spoken English. The cast included Deaf and hard-of-hearing actors, and the production emphasized accessibility in theater, featuring Ali Stroker, the first Broadway performer to use a wheelchair. The revival received a Tony Award nomination for Best Revival of a Musical.
Following "Spring Awakening," Arden directed the first Broadway revival of "Once on This Island" at Circle in the Square Theatre. His direction was noted for gender-fluid casting and innovative staging, resulting in multiple Tony Award nominations.
Arden has received two Tony Awards for Best Direction of a Musical, recognized for his work on the revival of "Parade" and "Maybe Happy Ending." "Parade," starring Ben Platt and Michaela Diamond, and "Maybe Happy Ending," which explores themes of love and companionship through the story of two robots in near-future Seoul, have both been acknowledged for their creative direction and impact on contemporary musical theater. "Maybe Happy Ending" was described by USA Today as one of the best musicals in years.
Arden also directed "The Lost Boys," based on the Warner Bros. film, which opened at Broadway's Palace Theatre. The production received 12 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and was described by The New York Times as the finest spectacle of the season. Arden's use of lighting and visual effects contributed to the show's distinctive style.
In addition to his Broadway work, Arden founded The Forest of Arden theater company. He is recognized for championing inclusive storytelling, notably casting Deaf actors in "Spring Awakening" and exploring a range of genres, including science fiction with "Maybe Happy Ending," documentary with "The Queen of Versailles," and horror with "The Lost Boys."
