Mark Martin Biography
Mark Anthony Martin is widely regarded as one of NASCAR’s all-time greatest drivers—even though he never won a Cup Series championship. His professional debut came in 1981, and he made a full-time mark from 1988 onward as the cornerstone driver for Jack Roush’s fledgling Roush Racing team.
Over a legendary 31-year career in NASCAR’s premier Cup Series (1981–2013), Martin compiled 882 starts, earning 40 victories, 56 pole positions, 271 top‑5s, and 453 top‑10 finishes. Despite never capturing the ultimate prize, he finished runner‑up in the driver standings five times (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2009).
Earlier in his racing life, Martin dominated the ASA and IROC circuits—earning four ASA championships and an unprecedented five IROC titles. He also earned 49 wins in the NASCAR Xfinity/Busch Series, holding the series wins record for years.
Known for his work ethic and consistently clean, strategic driving style, Martin was highly respected in the garage. After driving for teams like Dale Earnhardt Inc., Hendrick Motorsports, and Stewart‑Haas Racing, Martin retired following the 2013 season. He has since been inducted into both the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2015) and the NASCAR Hall of Fame (2017).
