Mark Bradford Biography
Mark Bradford is an American visual artist recognized for his large-scale abstract paintings created from paper. Bradford's work examines social and political structures that impact marginalized communities and vulnerable populations. Utilizing everyday materials and tools commonly found in hardware stores, Bradford has developed an artistic language often described as social abstraction, emphasizing that materials and techniques carry inherent meaning beyond their artistic use.
Bradford transforms materials collected from urban environments into wall-size collages and installations that reflect the informal networks—such as underground economies, migrant communities, and the repurposing of public spaces—that arise within cities.
Bradford began his formal art education at age 31, earning both a BFA and MFA from California Institute of the Arts. He held his first solo exhibition, "Floss," at the San Francisco Art Institute's Walter & McBean Galleries, and made his New York museum debut in "Freestyle" at Studio Museum in Harlem. Bradford participated in the Whitney Biennial at Whitney Museum of American Art, where he received the Bucksbaum Award, which led to his first major solo museum exhibition at Whitney, "Neither New nor Correct." His practice also includes video, print, and installation, such as "Mithra," a large-scale ark constructed from salvaged plywood barricade fencing, which was shipped to New Orleans for Prospect New Orleans, an exhibition of contemporary art responding to Hurricane Katrina.
Bradford represented the United States pavilion at the Venice Biennale with "Tomorrow is Another Day," later exhibited at Baltimore Museum of Art. His work has been the subject of major institutional surveys, including "End Papers" at Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and "Keep Walking" at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart in Berlin, which traveled to Amorepacific Museum of Art in Seoul, marking his first solo exhibition in South Korea. Bradford's works are included in the collections of Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Gallery in London, and Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others.
Bradford used the MacArthur Foundation grant to co-found Art + Practice with philanthropist Eileen Harris Norton and social activist Allan DiCastro, an organization providing arts engagement and skills training for foster youth in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Social engagement is integral to Bradford's practice, as he brings contemporary art and ideas to communities with limited access to museums and cultural institutions. He also created the limited-edition print series "Life Size," depicting a police body camera, with proceeds supporting Agnes Gund's Art for Justice Fund to aid individuals transitioning from prison, raising more than $1 million.
Bradford has received several honors, including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, the United States Artists fellowship, the Bucksbaum Award from Whitney Museum of American Art, and a MacArthur Fellows Program grant, also known as the MacArthur Genius Award. He has been appointed to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and received the US Department of State's Medal of Arts. Bradford was awarded the National Medal of Arts. His painting "Helter Skelter I" sold for $12 million, setting an auction record for a living African American artist at the time. Bradford has been profiled on "60 Minutes" and was included in Time Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People.
