Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Biography
Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is recognized for his dual career in professional football and medicine. His football career began when the Kansas City Chiefs selected him in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, making him the tenth player from a Canadian university to be drafted into the NFL. Duvernay-Tardif played college football at McGill University in Canada, where he also attended medical school and earned a doctorate in medicine, becoming the first active NFL player to become a doctor. His ability to balance a demanding sports career with rigorous medical studies was noted by the Kansas City Star.
On the field, Duvernay-Tardif secured a starting position as right guard by his second season and contributed to the Chiefs' victory in Super Bowl LIV. He is the first Quebec-born football player to win a Super Bowl championship. Duvernay-Tardif spent seven seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and concluded his NFL career with the New York Jets, retiring after eight seasons. During his college years, he won the J.P. Metras Trophy as the outstanding lineman in Canadian university football and the Stuart Forbes Trophy as McGill University's male athlete of the year.
A defining moment in Duvernay-Tardif's career occurred when he became the first NFL player to opt out of a season during a global pandemic, choosing to work at a long-term care facility near Montreal in a nursing role. He cited his commitment to public health and preventing the spread of the virus as his reason for stepping away from football. While working on the front lines, Duvernay-Tardif also enrolled in Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. His scrubs and lab coat are displayed in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Duvernay-Tardif has received recognition for his contributions to both sports and medicine, including being named Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated, co-winner of the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's athlete of the year, recipient of the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award, and the inaugural recipient of the Canada's Walk of Fame National Hero Honour. He was appointed as a Member to the Order of Canada.
After retiring from professional football, Duvernay-Tardif has focused on his medical residency and work as a keynote speaker. He established a foundation to promote youth participation in sports and the arts, and has authored a book. Duvernay-Tardif is a bilingual keynote speaker on leadership, resilience, high performance, and the future of healthcare, with a focus on healthy lifestyles and preventative medicine. His career continues to serve as an example of leadership and dedication in both sports and medicine.
