Gabes Torres Biography
Gabes Torres is a psychotherapist, essayist, grassroots organizer, and artist whose work examines the ongoing impact of colonialism and its influence on ideologies, cultures, languages, human behavior, and spiritual practices. Torres focuses on the intersection of mental health, the arts, spirituality, and justice-oriented practice, contributing to conversations about healing and human rights.
Torres earned a bachelor's degree in historical theology and philosophy at a theological school in Chicago, Illinois, where she studied the development of the Western church and its role in colonization in the Philippines. She later completed a master's degree in theology and culture at The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, with a focus on colonialism and its effects on hospitality. Torres also holds a master's degree in counseling psychology from the same institution. During her time in Seattle, she organized with abolitionist and anti-imperialist groups at the grassroots level.
Based in the global South, Torres works as a mental health practitioner, grassroots organizer, and writer. Her clinical practice and research address collective and intergenerational trauma, exploring the psychosomatic effects of imperialism, racism, climate crises, and human rights violations. Torres emphasizes healing from racial and migration trauma and works to decolonize therapeutic spaces by moving away from White Western modalities. She primarily serves women, femmes, and trans patients of the global majority and mentors therapists, organizers, artists, and culture workers internationally.
Torres founded and co-facilitated the Heritage Workshop, a virtual program for people of color to explore ancestral lineages, stories, and healing practices. She writes for Yes! Magazine, contributing a column on mental health and collective action, with articles covering topics such as Filipino communities navigating political grief and solidarity from the global South. Torres is also a poet and singer-songwriter, having independently produced three albums of original music.
Torres' work aims to challenge systems of injustice and white supremacy while fostering spaces for freedom, growth, and collective healing among marginalized communities. Her integration of clinical expertise, theological scholarship, and lived experience as a Filipina migrant informs her approach to topics of identity, trauma, and collective liberation.
