Harry Connick Jr. Biography
Harry Connick Jr. is a singer, pianist, composer, and actor recognized for his work across music, film, television, and Broadway. Connick's artistic foundation is rooted in the music of his native New Orleans, where he began performing as a pianist and vocalist at age 5. While still in school, he attended the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, studying with pianist Ellis Marsalis. Connick gained national attention with the soundtrack to the film "When Harry Met Sally." He has released 30 albums, showcasing his skills as a pianist, singer, songwriter, composer, and orchestrator, with sales exceeding 30 million albums.
Connick's music career includes several multi-platinum recordings such as "When Harry Met Sally," "Blue Light, Red Light," "When My Heart Finds Christmas," "Come By Me," and "Only You." He has received Grammy and Emmy awards, as well as Tony nominations for his live and recorded musical performances, achievements in film and television, and appearances on Broadway as both an actor and composer. During the pandemic lockdown, Connick produced the album "Alone With My Faith," for which he wrote new songs, arranged all tracks, played every instrument, and sang every vocal part, earning a Grammy nomination for best roots gospel album.
On Broadway, Connick has received Tony nominations as a lead actor in "The Pajama Game" and as a composer and lyricist for "Thou Shalt Not." The release of his album "True Love: A Celebration of Cole Porter" coincided with his return to Broadway in a show he wrote, arranged, orchestrated, and directed: "Harry Connick, Jr. — A Celebration of Cole Porter." This production featured a 25-piece orchestra and multimedia elements, highlighting Porter standards from the Great American Songbook.
Connick has appeared in 21 films, including "Hope Floats," "Dolphin Tale," and "P.S. I Love You," and on television in "American Idol," "Will & Grace," and "South Pacific," as well as in Emmy Award–winning concert specials. He starred in "Find Me Falling," a romantic comedy filmed in Cyprus and released by Netflix, which became the top English-language film globally on the platform for two consecutive weeks and features two original songs written and performed by Connick. He also launched "Harry," a national daytime television show featuring his touring band, which earned 11 Daytime Emmy nominations, including best host, and a Critics' Choice nomination for best talk show.
Connick has contributed to charitable efforts, particularly in helping New Orleans recover after Hurricane Katrina. Alongside saxophonist Branford Marsalis, he helped implement a plan to restore the city's musical and cultural heritage through the construction of Musicians' Village and the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music. Connick received the Jefferson Award for Public Service in recognition of his efforts to help New Orleans rebuild. Connick continues to be active in the entertainment industry, spanning jazz, pop, Broadway, and film.
