Emme Biography
Emme is recognized as the world's first plus-size supermodel, a distinction that marked a pivotal shift in the fashion industry. Emme began her career as a plus-size model, gaining international recognition for challenging traditional beauty standards. Before entering modeling, she earned a full athletic scholarship to Syracuse University, where she was a member of the crew team. After graduation, she worked as a reporter and morning anchor for KNAZ-TV, an NBC affiliate in Flagstaff, Arizona. Her modeling career began after responding to a call for curvy models, leading to her signing with a modeling agency.
Emme became the first full-figured model selected for People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" and was the first plus-size model to appear on a billboard in Times Square, representing Liz Claiborne. She was also the first full-figured model awarded a cosmetics contract with Revlon and is the only full-figured woman to have a doll created in her likeness. Her on-screen work includes appearances on television programs, reality series, talk shows, and documentaries. Emme hosted the E! Entertainment Television series "Fashion Emergency," where she provided fashion advice and makeovers.
Emme is known for her advocacy in women's empowerment, body positivity, and inclusive beauty. She was the first celebrity to address a Congressional subcommittee in Washington, D.C., raising awareness about eating disorders, body image, and self-esteem. Throughout her career, Emme has promoted body diversity, collaborating with organizations such as the National Eating Disorders Association and the Council of Fashion Designers of America to support positive body image and inclusive fashion. She lectures at universities including Yale and Harvard, as well as schools nationwide, on topics related to body image and self-esteem.
Emme is the author of three books: "True Beauty," "Life's Little Emergencies," and the children's book "What Are You Hungry For?" Her career includes roles as a TV personality, journalist, brand spokesperson, consultant, keynote speaker, and creative director of clothing lines EMME, mebyEMME, and TrueBeautybyEMME. She launched Fashion Without Limits: Changing the Face of Fashion with Syracuse University, developing an inclusive fashion education curriculum. After being diagnosed with Stage 2a Hodgkin's lymphoma, she underwent treatment and was declared cancer-free, later speaking publicly about her experience as part of her advocacy for women's health.
Emme has received numerous honors, including being named twice to People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People," recognition by Ladies' Home Journal as one of the "Most Important Women in America," and being called "The Godmother of the Full-Figured Industry" by Oprah Magazine.
