The Dropkick Murphys, an American Celtic punk band, was formed in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1996. The band currently includes members Ken Casey, Matt Kelly, Al Barr, James Lynch, Tim Brennan, and Jeff DaRosa. They initially gained recognition after signing with independent punk record label Hellcat Records, and their 2004 single, "Tessie," became their first mainstream hit. The band's final Hellcat release, 2005's "The Warrior's Code," included the song "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," which was featured in the film "The Departed." In 2007, they started releasing music through their own imprint label, Born & Bred. Their most recent albums, "This Machine Still Kills Fascists" and "Okemah Rising," were released in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
The Dropkick Murphys are known for their unique style, heavily influenced by bands like the Ramones, the Clash, and Sex Pistols, as well as Irish bands such as Stiff Little Fingers and the Dubliners. Their music often addresses social issues, such as the silent drug epidemic, and they have a strong relationship with the AFL-CIO, supporting working class and union causes.
