Dr. César Cruz Biography
Dr. César A. Cruz is a Mexican-American educator, author, poet, activist, and community organizer known for his work in educational equity, youth empowerment, and social justice. Cruz is the co-founder of Homies Empowerment, a community-based organization in Oakland, California, and was the first male Mexican immigrant to earn a doctorate from Harvard's Educational Leadership program. His career includes roles as an academic, public speaker, youth organizer, gang intervention specialist, and teacher, with a focus on building institutions and movements that support young people who have been underserved by traditional systems.
Cruz's activism includes participating in a hunger strike at the University of California, Irvine, to support affirmative action, as well as leading a 70-mile march and a 26-day hunger strike advocating for education rights. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from UC Berkeley and a doctorate in educational leadership from Harvard Graduate School of Education. His dissertation, titled "Letting Go of Clecha, While Holding Corazón; Developing a New Approach to Empowering Youth in Gangs the Homeboy Industries Way," explores innovative strategies for youth empowerment and gang intervention.
Homies Empowerment was established to support youth and the community through positive engagement. Co-founders Lizbeth Gomez and Cruz, both educators at a continuation school, aimed to create an environment where young people are treated with dignity. The organization operates the FREEdom School, an independent high school, as well as the FREEdom Store, Care Center, Learning Center, and FREEdom Farm. The FREEdom School serves students who do not thrive in large comprehensive high schools, including those with gang involvement or experience in the criminal justice system.
Cruz is the author of "Revenge of the Illegal Alien" and "Bang for Freedom." In "Revenge of the Illegal Alien," he presents a collection of poems, short stories, and political commentary. Cruz also co-founded the independent school Making Changes, focused on creating autonomous education spaces. He has delivered keynote addresses at events such as the Cesar Chavez Convocation at UC Santa Cruz and the Hermanos Unidos National Conference at California State University, Fullerton. The Christian Science Monitor has recognized Cruz as one of America's 30 education thought leaders.
Cruz's work has been acknowledged with honors including the Kolajo Afolabi Educational Award from Harvard University, the Comcast Local Hero Award, the Jefferson Award for Public Service, Peacemaker of the Year from KPFA-Pacifica Radio, the California Senate Human Rights Award, and the Human Relations Award from the City of El Cerrito. He serves as a Bridge Fellow for TNTP (The New Teacher Project) and is a member of the advisory board for Broader Bolder Approach to Education. Cruz's career reflects a dedication to community-driven solutions in education, youth advocacy, and social change.
