These days, he talks the game, appearing on the CSS SportsNite regional telecast. Now he also is Dorsey Levens, thespian.
And not one of those ex-jock, cameo-grunt-and-lumber-off-camera actors either. But, rather, a stage actor with whole pages of dialogue.
Levens will appear Wednesday through Sunday at the 14th Street Playhouse in “Torn,” a contemporary Christian drama about the perils of modern relationships. He is one of several former football players – along with Ryan Stewart (Tech, Detroit Lions) and Karon Riley (most notably with the Falcons) – who will appear in supporting roles.
This gig is not as unlike football as one might believe. “Studying a script is like studying a playbook,” Levens said. “Rehearsal is like practice. Game day is like play night. Tiffany (Brown, the play’s co-writer/director) is like a coach, pushing us in the right direction.” The former players are “excellent to work with, very disciplined,” Brown said. “They take direction well and work well. They get it.” Levens began taking acting lessons during his playing days, with designs on making the craft a post-football career.
This is his first meaty role – he has had bit parts in the movies “We Are Marshall” and “Three Can Play That Game.” It demands that he stretch himself.
His character, a devious cad, is one that women in the audience are sure to detest. Levens’ fiancee, Ann-Mary Johnson, had a definite reaction in the beginning: “She said, ‘You know what? Your character, I hate him.’ She let me have it,” Levens said.
