Christopher Meloni Biography
Christopher Meloni is recognized in the television industry for his portrayal of NYPD Detective Elliot Stabler on the NBC legal drama series "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and its spin-off "Law & Order: Organized Crime." Meloni received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his work as Stabler. Prior to these roles, Meloni developed his acting skills through various jobs, including construction work, bouncing, and personal training, before gaining experience in commercials. He furthered his training by studying with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre.
Meloni's career breakthrough included two contrasting roles: the character Chris Keller on the HBO series "Oz" and Detective Stabler on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." His partnership with co-star Mariska Hargitay contributed to the show's depiction of special victims crime investigations. Meloni's performance as Stabler earned him an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
In addition to his television work, Meloni has appeared in films such as "12 Monkeys," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," "Runaway Bride," "Wet Hot American Summer," "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," "Green Lantern: First Flight," "42," and "Man of Steel." He has also taken on roles in television series outside the "Law & Order" franchise, including starring in and executive producing the Syfy series "Happy!" and appearing in the FX drama "Pose" and "The Handmaid's Tale."
After leaving "Law & Order: SVU," Meloni returned to the franchise as Detective Stabler in "Law & Order: Organized Crime," where he also served as executive producer. He has contributed to the series as a writer, penning an episode of "Organized Crime." Meloni's work extends beyond acting; he received the Human Rights Campaign's Equality Award for his advocacy on LGBTQ issues. He has also been honored with the Canopy Award at the North Fork TV Festival, recognizing his contributions to diverse and meaningful storytelling in the television industry.
