Carol Liu Biography
Carol Liu is an immersive experience creator, filmmaker and entrepreneur working in the fields of film, VR and NFTs. She is building the Art Standard, an immersive experiences ecosystem which tells the stories of art and human heritage while leveraging the tools of web3, XR and AI.
Liu has been passionate about bringing to light untold stories about women and marginalized figures. She is the winner of the SF Film Society Rainin Screenwriting Grant for her feature, GODDESS OF NANKING. Her recent VR film TALE OF THE TIBETAN NOMAD, a collaboration with renowned playwright Stan Lai (SF Opera, "Dream of the Red Chamber") and production designer, Sandra Woodall (SF Ballet, "Angels in America") had its World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, Shanghai's Theater Above, and is distributed by Oculus TV. The original films she has written, directed and produced include award-winning humanitarian documentary RESTORING THE LIGHT (distributed by Kanopy Films, Cinema Guild, available on Amazon Prime) and screenplay LEFTOVER WOMAN (Writer’s Guild of America Festival pitch finalist). Her VR experience, MARIE ANTOINETTE VR, delves into the true history behind the ill-fated, historically misrepresented queen and was presented at Cannes Film Festival, Oculus Connect, and was an official selection of Busan International Film Festival. Available on Oculus (now Meta Quest) TV, it is now in development as a cinematic immersive experience, THE REDEMPTION OF MARIE ANTOINETTE.
Liu has extensive experience living and working internationally in Asia and Europe and has been interviewed and profiled by the LOS ANGELES TIMES, SF CHRONICLE, TIMEOUT, CHINA CENTRAL TELEVISION and has been a featured speaker at the US Embassy China, HarvardxDesign conference, Oculus Connect, among others. She holds a BA from Stanford University and an MFA in Film from NYU Tisch, was an inaugural fellow of Oculus Launchpad and Google’s pilot Jump Start program. Liu serves on the board of the Children's Creativity Museum and the San Francisco Opera Guild.
