C.J. Box Biography
C.J. Box is a New York Times bestselling author of more than 30 novels, recognized for his contributions to American crime fiction and thriller literature. Box is known for mystery and thriller novels that incorporate elements of the Western genre, blending crime, outdoor adventure, and political intrigue. Before focusing on fiction, Box worked as a reporter and editor at a newspaper in Saratoga, Wyoming, and held roles as a ranch hand, fishing guide, surveyor, and co-owner of an international tourism marketing firm. These diverse experiences inform Box's authentic portrayal of the American West in his writing.
In "Open Season," Box introduced Joe Pickett, a Wyoming game warden and outdoorsman who investigates corruption and crime across the plains. Pickett has been the central character in more than 26 novels, confronting environmental extremists, rogue federal officials, corrupt bureaucrats, and violent families. The Joe Pickett series is noted for its focus on crimes rooted in the land and the communities of the West, often beginning in remote locations such as hunting camps, ranch roads, and mountain trails. In addition to the Joe Pickett series, Box has written the Cody Hoyt/Cassie Dewell series, standalone novels, and short stories.
Box's work has received multiple honors, including the Anthony Award, Macavity Award, Gumshoe Award, and Barry Award for "Open Season" in the Best First Novel category. The standalone novel "Blue Heaven" received the Edgar Award for Best Mystery Novel. Box has also been recognized with the Maltese Falcon Award, two Barry Awards, the Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association Award for fiction, the Western Heritage Award for Literature by the National Cowboy Museum, and the Spur Award for Best Contemporary Novel by the Western Writers of America. More than 20 million copies of Box's books have been sold in the United States and internationally, with translations in 27 languages.
Box's novels have been adapted for television, including serving as executive producer on Paramount+'s "Joe Pickett" series and ABC's "Big Sky," based on the Cassie Dewell novels. "Big Sky" was adapted from the novel "The Highway." An outdoorsman, Box has participated in hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and skiing throughout Wyoming and the Mountain West. He has served on the board of directors for Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo and the Wyoming Office of Tourism. Box's career and regional expertise contribute to his reputation as a knowledgeable voice on the landscapes, communities, and culture of the American West.
